Furniture designs that promote the circular economy

12 July, 2021

“Design must be at the centre of circular economy strategies, and not just be a part of them”, María Navarro, manager of the Association of Designers of the Valencian Community.

Design is one of the key elements if we want to implement circular economy systems in companies. Some of the advantages that circular economy furniture tends to have are that it tends to be more innovative and reduce the negative impact on the environment, among others. The aim is to design and produce furniture that is efficient and respectful of the planet, thus minimizing the use of energy and polluting emissions.

The design of furniture is increasingly present in the manufacturing process and life of a product, from its composition, choice of raw materials, production, subsequent marketing and finally, its usability and reuse options that may occur.

Products in which circular design is applied are more innovative, as they minimise their negative impacts on the environment and reinforce the positive ones. Find out more about all of them in this post by Viccarbe.

What is circular economy

Circular economy refers to “a method of production and consumption that involves making the best use of material resources, thus reducing the input of new raw materials and avoiding the production of waste that may be unnecessary”.

The aim of the circular economy is none other than to permanently and sustainably conserve various natural resources by substituting products for services and designing furniture that can be reused several times.

More and more architects and interior designers are becoming environmentally conscious and, consequently, manufacturing and creating pieces that seek to reduce the impact of their processes. This concept of the circular economy provides an alternative to the familiar linear system of waste production.

Keys to the circular economy and furniture design

The concept of sustainability is based on meeting the various needs of the present without compromising the possibilities of future generations. But what does furniture design have to do with the circular economy? Basically everything, as they go together. Design is characterised by the fact it is the starting point of the production chain of a piece of furniture.

As professionals in the world of interior design, thanks to the circular economy, we can reuse and recycle different materials as many times as we want, thus avoiding the generation of unnecessary polluting waste and at the same time promoting values of social and environmental responsibility. Proof of this are some of our products where the concepts of circular economy are applied, always without detracting from the importance of design.

We will now look at some of the keys to interpreting the lifecycle of a piece of designer furniture:

Maintenance

The correct maintenance of a piece of designer furniture can help us to increase and maximise the useful life of the product. For example, when we buy a chair or a table, over time these pieces will continue to have the same functions if we look after them correctly.

Repair

By purchasing designer furniture from a company like Viccarbe we are promoting the circular economy. However, it may happen that a chair breaks down or breaks. Instead of replacing the product with a new one, at Viccarbe we are committed to a proper repair to prolong the life of our furniture, while taking care of the environment.

Reuse and reuse

It may be the case that, due to a series of circumstances, we want to modify or redistribute our home with new products. But what do we do with the furniture we design?

To promote the circular economy with these products, we can carry out a redistribution of parts through a change of ownership, for example.

Reconditioning

In this sense we can refer to the fact that, when we acquire a designer piece, we manage to modify its appearance by replacing the upholstery with a completely new one. In this way, what we are achieving is to prolong the useful life of the product, adapting to new fashions and maintaining its main structure.

Recycle

When we buy a piece of furniture that is committed from start to finish to promoting the circular economy, we are recovering the value of its materials and raw materials, while at the same time reusing and giving a second life to secondary materials, such as plastic bottles, for example.

Funda collection, design and circular economy

The circular economy in the design furniture sector provides a promising means to create more value in the sector. At Viccarbe we are committed to maximum sustainability and comfort. That is why the Funda chair stands out from the rest because it is created and designed in a way that is both innovative and light at the same time.

Designed by Stefan Diez under the premise of creating a sustainable and comfortable chair, the Funda collection is characterised by being a composition formed by two pieces: the development of this chair is based on the union of a metal structure designed to last over time, and an upholstered seat that can be replaced after the passage of time or wear and tear, with the aim of extending the life cycle of the products indefinitely.

At Viccarbe we are experts in designing dynamic, safe and up to date furniture. If you want to know more about our products, designest and projects, please consult our furniture catalogue.
