Vetona: industrial body, crafted soul

26 February, 2026

Rubén Mateos Brea, Head of Design at Viccarbe, signs his first authored piece, proudly reconnecting with his roots through an anthropological lens. Vetona is a side table conceived from a place of design sensitivity and a deep understanding of craft, where the creative gesture is supported by constructive precision.

For Mateos, objects are carriers of everyday life—witnesses to gestures, habits, and contexts that, over time, acquire meaning. It is precisely to a memory that he turns when shaping this piece, specifically to his first encounter with the craft in his grandfather’s workshop in Plasencia (Extremadura). From that space, now a reminiscence and the starting point of the creative process, he rescues the bench vise as both structural and symbolic element around which Vetona is articulated.

The name equally refers to this territorial root. The Vetones, one of the pre-Roman peoples settled in the region, were known for their relationship with metallurgy and the creation of durable artifacts linked to daily life. This legacy, interpreted through a contemporary reading, resonates in the structural logic of the table.

In this way, the spirit of the artisan workshop and the solidity of industrial technique converge in this height-adjustable table designed for everyday use. In dialogue with the tradition of designers such as Achille Castiglioni and Enzo Mari, Mateos incorporates a pre-existing technical component and elevates it to the defining feature of the piece. The bench vise thus becomes the conceptual and functional axis of the design: a precise mechanism that, reinterpreted as an intuitive crank, allows the height to be adjusted with clarity and control. Through this mechanism, the gas-assisted lifting system enables the table to be freely set between 50 and 72 cm, adapting to different uses and contexts.

The structure combines raw-finished elements with lacquered surfaces configurable in various colors, introducing Verde Martelé as a new option that enhances its industrial character. The tabletop—available in round or rectangular formats—is crafted in solid finger-jointed oak with different finishes, or soft-touch Fenix compact option. A balanced dialogue is thus established between material and narrative, contrasting the technical solidity of the base with the tactile warmth of the surface.

For all these reasons, Vetona emerges as a timeless table, designed to accompany new ways of working, meeting, or inhabiting dynamic environments. Placed alongside sofas or lounge chairs, it functions as a support surface for varied uses, addressing needs in compact settings or adding a distinctive aesthetic accent in larger areas, even when used in combination.

Through its apparent simplicity, the piece proposes a contemporary reading: the coexistence of craftsmanship and industry, the layering of uses within a single environment, and coherence with the materiality of the interior that hosts it. With Vetona, Rubén Mateos Brea invites us to connect with the piece as a bearer of contemporary anthropological meaning.
